Sensitive Greek
On black greekdom from within
As someone who has been unwillingly on the chopping block of the Instagram account named greek shenanigans more than a few times I can speak from experience about its destructive nature within our once proud greek world and how it is a part of a much larger problem within the black community that is slowly tearing us apart and down. Its inception, Greek Shenanigans has been creating a toxic environment within the collegiate black atmosphere that prevents growth and improvement not seen in other Greek communities. Encouraging the worst parts of the African American culture for the world to mock at and promote without a full understanding. And finally, because of our inability as a community to foster an environment for our youth to grow in and instead create an environment of cyber bullying and isolation for our youth we do not know how to listen to them especially when they are reaching out to tell us about ourselves and instead tell them that need to “suck it up” or “toughen up”Which in all is contributing to the breakdown and the dissolvent of the proud African American community collegiate and otherwise.
Greekshenanigans3 main purpose is to target The Divine Nine. The Divine Nine is a collection of historically black Greek-letter organizations (Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho) that all have the sole purpose of encouraging and promoting the African American community to greater heights starting with the collegiate level and training those who enter the organizations to uphold and showcase only the greatest strengths of the African American excellence to the world and give them the tools to carve out steps to help elevate the community. Greek Shenanigans is a network of social media that post multiple times a daily with a variety of both videos and photos with straightly petty and degrading hashtags meant to showcase in the worst possible light a part of the African American community. Since its inception, Greek Shenanigans has been creating a toxic environment within the collegiate black atmosphere that prevents growth and improvement not seen in other Greek communities. It all starts with a submission, an inbox of evidence said to show “shenanigans” amongst the black collegiate Greek life and from where the operator of the pages debates and then chooses a submission to post where they promote the post with a variety of tags, hashtags, and captions that belittle those within the picture and or video for no other fact that the operator can and do it all without showcasing their face or leaving the comfort of their home. This process is known to well to the black greek collegiate life, it is a tale that is told in warning every new member once inducted into the organization. This process, created by greek shenanigans installs within our minds that someone is always watching you and always waiting to broadcast your every mistake to the world in an effort to degrade you and stop you from growing and prospering within your organizations. As a member of The Divine Nine we are taught to uphold the purpose of creating a loving and welcoming environment, this Instagram page promotes a problem that has uniquely become a staple within the black community, it creates a degrading and abusive environment. This is an issue that other greek letter communities have not had a problem with because, they as an organization along with it’s older members of that organization actively create an environment the encourages mistakes and growth from those mistakes within the organizations and have rules in place along with procedures that protect the sanctity of that environment and those within it The divine Nine there are sections after sections indicating the proper way to conduct and go about handling every situation from how to respect our organization’s founders and their names to what to do when faced with hazing from those within our respective organizations but nothing about how to create, cultivate, and protect a healthy loving environment why is it that we continually refuse to create healthy or loveing environments for our youth to prosper and grow in. so that they can gain confidence and strength to carry out the goal of our organizations and elevate our culture and people to a higher level in the eyes of the world.
These pages along with stomping outgrowth and acceptance of mistakes in our community it also encourages the worst parts of the African American culture too for the world to mock at and promote without a full understanding. Our inability to encourage and come together as a unit to prevent outside forces from manipulating us into tearing down our people under the false pretenses of entertainment but who are we entertaining who are destroying our brothers and sisters for all of social media white and black greek and non-greek watching during slavery times slaves were called upon to entertain the masters with acts of singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument if they were capable of it accounts of these actions later created the phrase “dancing monkey” and now years after slavery we are still continuing to be gat dancing monkey’s for the master. But this time instead of entertaining with our talents of the arts we are entertaining the masters with our talents of self destruction tearing down people who look just like us with names and phrases they have taught us because they are to scared to say it to us themselves this is we are allowing and encouraging this self-destructive behavior with the perfect example of this being Greek shenanigans and the comment section of every post nothing but the belittling and degradation of our youth at a time in there life where they should be cultivated and encouraged to find solutions to the world’s problems but instead they are trying to deal with their entire community attacking them constantly questioning everything they do and say and wear this is not how we break free from the restriction and stereotypes pushed on us by other races this is how we continue to perpetuate the stereotypes and the make it near impossible to solve the problem of the world because we are trying to solve the problem from within our own people.
Finally, one of the greatest impacts Greek shenanigans has on the black community is that it shows one of the most toxic traits of the community and that is the encouragement and promotion of a bullying culture that has too much pride to listen when it’s youth who bares the brunt of most of the bullying is reaching out to be heard instead e reject with them with dismissive phrases such as “suck it up” “toughen up” or in this special case “no room for sensitive greeks” and these are contributing to the toxic cycle within the African American Community and the inability of us in the committee to pay attention and break that cycle and that is the true impact of what greek shenanigans is and what it stands for within our community
The black greek community has a problem that is systemic from the black community’s problem of constantly degrading and abusing everyone who is unfortunate to be born and have to grow u within in it the beauty of other ethnic communities is that they understand the necessity of coming together and lifting one another within the commit up especially the youth that will carry them forward it is a trait that most would think we would gain after centuries of being ostracized as a whole race but instead we allowed the pressure and the isolation drive us to turn on ourselves and claw at skin that looks like our own and because of that not only is our youth collegiate and otherwise in danger but so is our entire race and the prosperity of it. Without unity amongst ourselves, we can not have elevation and equality amongst the other races.
